Allen Gransch Takes Over as GFL's Chief Operating Officer

So GFL has just promoted Allen Gransch to Chief Operating Officer, effective October 1st. He's been with the company for exactly a month.

That's the speed of it. One month from joining as Executive Vice President to running operations at a North American environmental services outfit with twenty thousand people on the payroll.

Gransch came over in the SECURE Waste acquisition. He was SECURE's CEO before that, and before that he'd held basically every senior role you can think of—CFO, COO, President. The man started with SECURE back in 2007, its first year of operations. Twenty years in the same company will teach you something about how to run a waste management business.

The move does shuffle the deck a bit. Billy Soffera, who was running operations at GFL, slides into what they're calling a senior strategic adviser role. He'll keep working on value-creation initiatives—the long game stuff he's been involved in for the past five years. Not exactly being shown the door.

It's the kind of appointment that makes sense on paper. You buy a company, you bring in the person who actually knows how to operate it at scale. Gransch has spent nearly two decades navigating a diversified waste platform, building teams, handling organizational change. GFL's CEO Patrick Dovigi said the obvious thing: that this experience complements their growth strategy.

Whether it works in practice, whether the culture fits, whether twenty years running one company actually translates to running something bigger—that's a different question. But the mechanics are clear enough.
