Biomethane Is Quietly Becoming the Transport Fuel Nobody Expected

You drive past a landfill and think of methane leaking into the air. Someone in São Paulo is thinking of fuel.

That's the basic insight of a new international study commissioned by Instituto MBCBrasil. Biomethane, produced by breaking down organic waste through anaerobic digestion, has emerged as one of the most mature solutions for cutting emissions from transport—especially heavy-duty freight and long-haul trucking.

The research comes from leading universities across Brazil: University of São Paulo, Federal University of Itajubá, Agronomic Institute of Campinas, and Mauá Institute of Technology. It's not a narrow academic exercise. They looked at mature and emerging markets across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, examining how biomethane actually works at scale, not just in theory.

Here's what strikes me about this.

Biomethane gets produced from vinasse, manure, municipal waste, sewage—the stuff that already exists. You're not planting crops. You're not building new extraction infrastructure. You're taking residues that cause problems and converting them into fuel. That yields greenhouse gas reductions while closing the loop. Energy security as a side benefit. Circular economy, if you want the buzzword, but also just sensible engineering.

The scale isn't hypothetical either. Paulínia's landfill facility operates up to 225,000 cubic metres per day. Goiânia has converted urban bus fleets. These aren't pilots. They're commercial operations that have already proven the model works.

Now, here's where I need to correct myself slightly—actually, that's not quite right. The appeal isn't that biomethane is new or revolutionary. It's that it works with infrastructure that already exists. A truck built to run on compressed natural gas can run on compressed biomethane without modification. Same engines. Same refuelling network, more or less.

That matters because the global vehicle fleet in 2030 will still contain mostly cars and trucks we've already built. Battery technology has its place, but electrification isn't feasible for long-haul freight on the timescales we're working with. Biomethane fills that gap without requiring fleets to scrap working vehicles or rebuild distribution systems.

Brazil's government has noticed. The Fuel of the Future Law (enacted in 2024) created a Biomethane Certificate of Origin system. Starting at 0.5% mandatory blending in 2026—which is where we are now—rising to 10%. It's a policy infrastructure, basically. The government is saying: this technology will scale, and here's how.

What I find most grounded about this study is that it doesn't oversell biomethane as the complete answer to transport emissions. It identifies it as immediate, available, and cost-effective for the sectors where electrification remains difficult. Heavy vehicles. Cross-country freight. Long-distance routes where a battery truck still doesn't make practical sense.

The question now is whether the rest of the world takes the hint.
