Space Debris Would Keep Growing Without New Launches

I spent an hour recently reading about space debris. Not the most cheerful Friday evening, but it fundamentally changed how I think about the problem.
The thing that got me: even if we stopped all launches tomorrow, the debris population wouldn't stabilise. It would keep growing. On its own.
Sounds backwards, doesn't it? You'd think no new launches means no new junk. But orbital mechanics doesn't work that way.
Here's what actually happens. Two pieces of debris collide at something like 9 kilometres per second. One impact creates not two clean pieces but dozens of new fragments. Those fragments hit other objects. Those collisions spawn more fragments. And so on. It feeds itself. It's called the Kessler syndrome, and once it starts running, you can't switch it off by simply stopping launches.
The density of debris in low Earth orbit—the region where most satellites live—is now high enough that this cascade reaction is no longer theoretical. It's already underway, more or less. And here's the bit that sticks with you: fragmentation events now add new debris objects faster than the natural decay can remove them. Natural decay takes months or years, something like that. The collisions are happening all the time.
So the logic inverts. Not adding new satellites is obviously better than adding them, but it's no longer sufficient. The orbit is already crowded enough that you have to actively clean it up.
Think of it like a car park. You can stop bringing new cars, but if people keep banging into each other, the wreckage just piles up. Eventually the whole lot becomes unusable.
That's where we are now with space. The real problem isn't future launches. It's the debris that's already up there, colliding, fragmenting, creating more debris. Actually, that's not quite right—it's both. More launches add mass to the problem, yes. But even if they stopped completely, momentum alone would keep the destruction going.
Which means the only real solution is active removal. Going up there and physically bringing the junk down. It's expensive, technically hard, and nobody yet has a clear plan for the smaller fragments. But without it, certain orbits will become genuinely dangerous within a generation or two.
We designed ourselves into a corner, one launch at a time.
