When Waste Becomes a Certified Crop Input

A grocery store has to do something with the avocados nobody bought. So does Divert.
Earlier this month, the company announced that two of its liquid fertilizers—both extracted from unsold food—now carry organic designations from the USDA and California. The 6-0-0 formulation is OMRI Listed. The 7-0-0 is registered with California's program and working toward the OMRI stamp.
This matters because scale changes everything.
Before these certifications, Divert's nitrogen liquids were useful, more or less. Farmers could apply them. But certified organic farms couldn't touch them. An organic farmer has rules. The input material needs documentation, third-party verification, proof that it doesn't violate USDA National Organic Program standards. Divert had to clear those hurdles before any organic operation could legally buy.
Actually, I should be precise here. The nutrients themselves—recovered from food waste through anaerobic digestion, then extracted via membrane reactor—didn't change. What changed was the label. The permission. The pathway from a grocery store's trash bin to an organic field.
The mechanism is simple enough. Unsold food comes in. Divert processes it for renewable gas. Somewhere in that process, nitrogen gets concentrated into a liquid. That liquid becomes fertilizer. Nutrients that would have rotted somewhere now go back into soil growing the next crop.
It's the kind of thing that sounds obvious once you hear it—food cycle, round and round—until you remember that most of it never happens at all. Most unsold food lands in a landfill. The nutrients stay buried. The system starts over.
What organic status actually unlocks is access. Certified farms represent a market with real spending power. They pay premium prices because they operate under constraints. They need inputs that tick every compliance box. Before September, Divert's products sat on the outside looking in.
None of this solves the core problem, which is simply that grocers and suppliers grow too much food to begin with. But it does mean the food that slips through the system can loop back instead of leaving it entirely. That's the difference between waste and input.
The company calls it food-system circularity. Fair enough.
